Case 1 (Stroke)

A 80-year-old man have a chronic stroke. He have received intensive physiotherapy in private hospitals and NGO physiotherapy centers, but the progress was still not satisfactory after months, and his family members have difficulties in taking care of his daily life. His elderly carer suffers from carer stress, and has pain in her back and her emotions are also affected. Our physiotherapist conducted a comprehensive assessment for the patient and found that the patient was very afraid of falling, and the whole body tensed up and failed to co-ordinate effectively when walking. The walking aid used at home was not at accurate length, and the posture was wrong, and thus the progress was slow. He is depressed and was slow initially. Our physiotherapist targets his problems and delivers training gradually, focusing on improving his balance and trunk control, cultivate the patient’s self-confidence in daily activities, and correct the patient’s posture when using the walker, and provide correct and effective advice to his wife and carer about proper transfer skills. The patient's walking improveds significantly afterwards. In addition, in order to deal with family problems, our physiotherapist not only improves the family on how to properly transfer the patient, but also regularly communicates with the them to make the family understands the patient's progress. Finally, we also arrange his elderly carer to receive back pain treatments to relieve the pain.
